Alexander Ovechkin might be one of the NHL’s oldest superstars, but he remains a hit on Instagram amongst fans of all ages.
The Washington Capitals left winger, who recently eclipsed 800 goals, has the highest amount of followers among NHLers with approximately 1,600,000. He also has the highest amount of average likes with 83,805, according to sports news website sportworldnews.org.
The site’s report said Ovechkin has the lowest engagement rate with his followers with 5.10%, but his popularity sees him able to earn up to $5,460 U.S. per sponsored post.
Sportworldnews.org looked at the social media profiles of the NHL players, and also influencer marketing calculators, to establish which star is the most influential on social media and how much they earn per sponsored post.
Toronto Maple Leafs centre and reigning NHL MVP Auston Matthews is ranked as the second-most influential player in the NHL this season. Matthews has 792,986 followers, gets on average 69,368 likes per post, has an engagement rate of 8.78%, and would earn up to $3,950 per sponsored post.
The Edmonton Oilers’ MVP front-runner and player of this generation Connor McDavid is ranked as the third most influential player. With 1,032,887 followers on Instagram, he gets on average 78,430 likes per post, has an engagement rate of 7.60% with his followers, and would earn up to $3,427.50 for a sponsored post.
Fresh off a Stanley Cup win, Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche slots in as the fourth-most influential in the NHL this season. MacKinnon has 304,544 followers, gets on average 35,987 likes on each post, and would earn up to $1,525 for each sponsored post.
In fifth place is Leon Draisaitl of the Edmonton Oilers. Draisaitl has 275,816 followers, gets on average 18,833 likes per post, and would earn up to $1,378.75 per sponsored post.
Nikita Kucherov is the sixth-most influential player in the NHL this season. The Tampa Bay Lightning player has 270,678 followers, gets on average 55,429 likes per post, has an engagement rate of 20.63%, and would earn up to $1,361.25 per sponsored post. Kucherov has the highest engagement rate of the players in this top 10.
Kucherov’s teammate Andrei Vasilevskiy is next at 208,562 followers on Instagram, gets on average 27,456 likes per post, and can earn up to $1,048.75 per sponsored post.
In eighth place is Cale Makar who plays for the Colorado Avalanche. Makar has 176,894 followers, gets on average 21,636 likes per post, and would earn up to $891.25 per sponsored post.

The ninth-most influential player is Roman Josi of the Nashville Predators. Josi has 130,645 followers, gets on average 11,101 likes per post, and would earn up to $658.75 per sponsored post.
Finally, the Lightning’s Victor Hedman is the tenth-most influential player in the NHL this season. Hedman has the least Instagram followers of the top 10 with 55,577, gets on average 8,002 likes per post, has an engagement rate of 14.49%, and would only earn $386.25 per sponsored post.
