Dater’s Daily: Kane and Toews Starting To Ponder Moving On? NHL News And Notes

A good Thursday to all. Sunny, but cold here in the Mile High City today. Brennan and I will be at practice today, and then I’m going to sit down to be interviewed for another documentary about something from the Avalanche past. I can’t say what the subject matter is yet, but I think it’ll be a fun one to watch. On to some NHL news, notes and links, including an interesting story about Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews: The trade speculation about the two Chicago Blackhawks’ aging stars (I say “aging” with respect) is, in my opinion anyway, going … Read more

Rangers score four straight in third, defeat Golden Knights

LAS VEGAS — Mika Zibanejad scored twice on the power play as part of the New York Rangers’ four-goal third period in a 5-1 victory against the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena on Wednesday. “We come to a building that’s loud, to a team that’s really good, and we’ve got 1-1 going into the third on the road,” Zibanejad said. “So, we just regroup and see this as a good opportunity to get two points, and that’s what we did.”  Zibanejad also had an assist, and Artemi Panarin had three assists for the Rangers (13-10-1). Igor Shesterkin made 25 … Read more

All Defenseman Linked to Oilers In Trade Talk So Far This Season

Insiders, fans, and media are all saying the same thing: the Edmonton Oilers need a defenseman. Darnell Nurse and Cody Ceci are playing too much, Brett Kulak might be too high in the rotation to be as effective as he needs to be, Evan Bouchard and Philip Broberg are struggling in elevated roles and Tyson Barrie is hit or miss when it comes to his effectiveness on a night-to-night basis. It makes sense the organization would be linked in trade talks to a number of potential blueliners. That said, so many names have been tossed out there, it’s easy to … Read more

Christmas may be new Thanksgiving as NHL playoff barometer

For the better part of two decades since the NHL instituted a salary cap, enjoying turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes were synonymous with feeling pretty good about making the playoffs. Dating to 2005-06, with lockout- and pandemic-related seasons excepted, 76% of teams in a playoff spot by the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday wound up qualifying. It became such a popular narrative it began to seep into coaches’ offices and locker rooms based on the odds alone. Maybe not this year. Thanks to the season starting later than normal, many contenders still trying to find a groove amid various injuries and expansion … Read more

NHL Power Rankings: Devils Double Down in No. 1

Ed Mulholland-USA TODAY Sports With a league-leading 21 wins, the Devils are the No. 1 ranked team for the second week in a row, joining the Bruins and Avs to be the only teams to hold down the top spot for multiple weeks.  It’s become a three-headed race at the top with the Knights joining the fray, who move into the second spot this week thanks to a shootout win in Boston. The Leafs are the only team to drop out of last week’s top five but not necessarily through any fault of their own. The Jets had more convincing … Read more

3 Canadiens Underachieving to Start Season

The Montreal Canadiens are off to a good start, considering they were supposed to be one of the league’s worst teams based on last year’s showing. So far this season, they are .500 and just four points from a playoff spot, which is very good, given the team is without superstar Carey Price and has four rookie defencemen in the lineup. Nick Suzuki’s line is leading the way, and he and Cole Caufield are scoring at about a point-per-game pace. However, in Montreal, it is not all rainbows and sunshine, and their players are not meeting their expectations. Here is … Read more

Screen Shots: St. Louis Blues, Colorado Avalanche and Price

Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports Welcome back to Screen Shots, a regular THN.com feature in which we analyze a few hockey topics in smaller portions. As always, we’ll get right to it: The St. Louis Blues have hit the skids for the second time this season. They’re on a four-game losing streak, and they’ve dropped six of their past seven games. The pile of losses comes directly after a seven-game winning streak – and that comes after they lost eight games in a row. They’re the NHL’s streakiest team this season, and nobody can figure out why this veteran group is … Read more

Bednar: MacKinnon expected to ‘miss some time’ with upper-body injury

Colorado Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar didn’t have a promising update on Nathan MacKinnon‘s status one day after the star forward suffered an upper-body injury against the Philadelphia Flyers. “The fact he’s leaving early in the game is not a good sign,” he said Tuesday, according to Altitude TV’s Vic Lombardi. “We know he’s gonna miss some time. Just don’t know how long.” The cause of MacKinnon’s ailment is unclear, but he appeared to be in discomfort after taking a shot in the first period of Monday’s 5-3 loss in Philadelphia. He also took a couple of hits from Scott … Read more
